our
Terroir

Old vineyards planted generations ago. Flysch-marl soils with plenty of shell limestone formed 3 million years ago, and more than 100 different micro-sites with extremely varied soil formations. Warm winds flowing in from the Pannonian Plain, and a cooling climate from the Vienna Woods and the Danube. All these unique factors allow great wines to emerge.

our
Past

The winery’s history dates back to 1683. Ludwig van Beethoven lived in the romantic, listed suburban house as early as 1817 while working on his 9th Symphony.

Franz Mayer gave modern viticulture a face; it is no coincidence that he is still regarded today as the doyen of Viennese viticulture.

our
Vision

Hans Schmid, owner and visionary, has always been fascinated by Vienna’s unique and picturesque wine landscape. Together with his highly competent team, he succeeded within just a few years in achieving his goal of bringing the winery back to the top of Austrian viticulture. Today, Weingut Mayer am Pfarrplatz is once again considered a flagship of Viennese viticulture, attracting national and international attention through its spirit of innovation.

Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC
then and now.

Once dismissed as a simple wine, it is now the pride of the Viennese. For generations, this wine has been vinified in our house from Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Rotgipfler, and Zierfandler. Planted, harvested and fermented together – it combines the characters of several expressive varieties, making it unique in its aroma. With the 2013 vintage, Wiener Gemischter Satz achieved DAC status and thus a protected designation of origin. It is one of Austria’s most traditional wines and a piece of the identity of Vienna, the city of wine.

What lies behind our work.

Certified by “Sustainable Austria,” we work naturally and gently in the vineyards and cellar.

Selective hand-harvesting in multiple passes results in wines that are true to their variety and a pleasure to drink.

The style of the wines from Mayer am Pfarrplatz is characterized by elegant structure, finesse, and drinkability.

As a member of Wien Wein and the Traditionsweingüter Österreich (Austrian Traditional Wineries), we work together on wines of international caliber.

To highlight Vienna’s best sites and thereby produce wines with particularly strong character and longevity – that is the objective of the Vienna Traditional Wineries.

Stronger together.
